New York (HedgeCo.net) – Hedge fund giant Blackstone Group has hired John Finley, formerly a partner at Simpson Thacher & Bartlett as senior managing director and chief legal officer. He will take over from the retiring Robert Friedman in September.

The Wall Street Journal reports: “Blackstone subscribes to the George Halas theory of recruiting which is you hire the best athlete,” said Mr. Friedman, referring to the iconic Chicago Bears football coach and owner. “And John is just an outstanding legal talent.”

Finley was the head of Simpson’s global M&A practice, where he also specialized in corporate governance.
