Hedge funds’ bets shouldn’t be allowed to steer housing policy

STL – Nature may abhor a vacuum, but Congress doesn’t seem to mind going for years with a giant void where the nation’s housing policy should be.

The problem is that in politics, as in nature, something always rushes to fill empty space. In the case of the bailed-out mortgage bundlers Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, a handful of hedge funds are playing the opportunists’ role.
