Hedge Funds Beat the Stock Market Last Year for the First Time in Five Years

(Opalesque) The hedge fund industry is alive and while not doing well, is doing OK. The Back Story: The choppy waters of the fourth-quarter’s volatile markets were tough to navigate for most investors. Lo and behold: The ones who are supposed to be the smartest, and equipped with the fanciest tools, managed to do a bit better. For the five years leading up to that, hedge funds have failed to beat the S&P 500’s returns, including dividends, like last year, when the HFRI Asset Weighted index generated 6.7%, while the stock index gained 21.8% and bonds 4.2%.
